Are You Having A Merry Christmas?

I know you have 101 things to do today to get everything done before next Sunday.  But before you race off to tick the next thing off your list, just take one minute to think about "what's all this racing about for anyway?"

As the name implies, the festive season is supposed to be festive. Duh. However if you are running about like a headless chook (Aussie for chicken) then you probably are not feeling like breaking out into a spontaneous rendition of Deck the Halls nor, feeling particulary merry right now.

So regardless of how much you feel you have to get done before next Sunday, take a few big deep breaths and before you get off your seat make a commitment to moving forward through the next few days in a more peaceful and calm way.

Not only will that allow you to get through you list more efficiently and enjoy the festive Christmas season that much more but it will allow those who you are with to do so also. You see, your way of being rubs off on others. So if you are:

  • feeling anxious about all the relatives landing at your place on Sunday or about anything to do with Christmas day
  • a bit uptight with your spouse for no good reason (but lots of bad ones)
  • getting all hot and bothered with the length of the lines at every checkout you go through
  • being impatient with your kids and raising your voice more than usual
  • cursing at red lights and the lack of car spaces at the mall
  • or just generally stressed out and acting in ways that are neither calm or 'merry'

...all the while chastising yourself for not being more organized this Christmas like you vowed you would be, then you are hardly bringing merriment to those you live and work with. Rather, quite the opposite. You are causing them to feel more stressed than blessed for having you around!

In the words of Edna Ferber, 'Christmas isn't a season. It's a feeling'. So as you move forward today and through the rest of the week remember that all the little stuff that is getting you uptight at the minute right really is, in the big scheme of life, little stuff.   It does not matter.  What does matter though is your ability to truly feel the spirit of Christmas and to enjoy your life and your experience of being alive right now, today, regardless of how many things remain on your 'to do' list.

Your doing so will automatically help others enjoy their day more too.  By feeling less stress you can spread more of the love and joy that the Christmas season is all about.  So let go a little, lighten up and as you begin to find yourself being dragged down into the unimportant stuff remind yourself that it is exactly that - small stuff - then take a deep breath, stand up tall, put a smile on your face and make a conscious choice to create for yourself (and those you love) a truly Merry Christmas!

Have a peaceful and fabulous Christmas!
