Welcome new and returning readers!
I’ve just spent a wonderful weekend high up in the Colorado Rockies in Aspen (and no, it wasn’t at Kevin Costner’s wedding… my invite must have got lost in the mail). It was my first trip to Colorado and my first visit to the Rockies… and it was beautiful!
The fall leaves were changing color and it was not only spectacular, it was inspiring.
So what is it that inspires you in your life? Not only in the environment in which you live your life but in the direction your life is heading in.
That’s what I’m writing about this month; about living an inspired life. I hope it touches your spirit as the Rockies in the fall did mine.
May you have an inspiring day!
Margie
DOES YOUR LIFE INSPIRE YOU?
“If you climb to the top of the mountain but you haven’t enjoyed the climb, then it wasn’t a successful climb”
Robert Browning
If you’ve ever heard me speak you’ve probably heard this quote. It’s a favorite of mine and resonates even more with me today after a weekend of climbing snow capped mountains. I share this quote with you because I believe that success in life is more than just arriving at a destination, it spirit you bring to your life on a daily basis. HOWEVER, to enjoy the journey, you need to be journeying toward something that inspires you in the first place.
So, what inspires you about your future? Do you have a career goal that excites you? Do you have a vision for your family that touches your heart? Do you have a vision for your life as a whole that really calls you to being the best you can be every day and makes each day that much more meaningful and rewarding?
In my coaching, I often find that people haven’t got their eyes set on climbing any particular mountain. Now there is nothing necessarily ‘wrong’ about this so long as they are truly content with where their life is each day. Generally though I find that people aren’t. They feel uninspired about themselves and resigned about their future as being nothing particularly different from their past.
The problem is, if you don’t know where you want to go, any road will take you. So what is a direction you be moving your life forward in that would inspire you? Do you have an immediate answer to that or does it leave you pondering “hmmm.. I don’t know”.
Or let me ask you another way “If I were to wave my magic wand and bring into your life anything at all, what would you have me grant you?”
Are you still pondering?
Often we humans resist even dreaming about such things, chastising ourselves immediately, with “what’s the point? It’s stupid to get carried away with such fantasies”.
Well, to that I would answer, if you cannot find the courage to even dream of having the kind of life that truly inspired and excited you, then there’s a snowballs chance in hell that you will ever be able to actually have it.
So why resist? Because you’re scared it’s not possible for you and if you think about it, much less verbalize it to others or, shudder shudder, write it down, then you are making yourself vulnerable to the possibility of failure. That is, where will that leave you if it doesn’t all just ‘happen’ for you.
Well that is where choice comes into the picture. Your choice as to how you move forward toward your goal and whether you process the obstacles and setbacks along the way as ‘failures’ or permanent inadequacies on your part or, as what they are, obstacles and setbacks. Nothing more.
So, back to my original question, what goals could create in your life that would make your daily living not only more inspiring, but also more purposeful, more meaningful and a lot more fun.
Though I used the term ‘mountain’, things that inspire you may not be quite so lofty as taking on Mt Everest. It could be being anything that just touched you deeply. For example, it could be:
- being a better parent in which you’d make an effort to spend more 1:1 time being present for your children each day;
- going back to study in a new discipline that has always fascinated you but which you’ve always had so many reasons which now wasn’t the right time (to which I’d respond, if not now, when?? And who says you have to get it done in a hurry?)
- spending more time with special people in your life that you just haven’t made time for because having deeper and more intimate relationships with those people inspire you
- Planning that vacation/adventure to some part of the globe that has always captivated you and starting saving toward it
Ultimately it could be anything under the sun. What it is that inspires you doesn’t have to inspire anyone else (I mean no-one else on earth is quite like you so why would anyone feel inspired by the same things).
“There are many wonderful things that will never be done if you do not do them” Hon Charles D Gill
My dad has this saying that goes “You’re a long time dead” and you know, as unpoetic as it is, you can’t argue with its truthfulness. As it does for me, I hope it gives you pause to ask yourself “what am I doing whilst I’m alive that makes me feel I’m making the most of what life has to offer and which fills my life with a deep sense of fulfillment and meaning?”
Remember if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got. If you choose to continue on in a job that you loathe, in a relationship that drains you or living a sedentary existence where the most exciting thing on your horizon is tonight’s rerun of Seinfeld, then go right ahead. Just know that whether you live a life that not only inspires you, but inspires those around you (and if you’ve got children, what greater gift can you give them?) is 110% your choice.
I encourage you to give some thought to this because your choice to begin taking action toward goals that inspire you will make all the difference in the world to your experience of living each day, and indeed, to the world in which we share.
Finally, before you press delete and decide that the status quo, as uninspiring as it is, is still more attractive (and less terrifying) than stepping up to the plate in your life and taking on a mountain that truly makes your spirit soar, then reflect on this quote from a man far more wise than me.
“The aim, if reached or not, makes great the life”
Robert Browning
